NYC to Cape Cod by bike

Click Map Above to see it BIGGER!!!
We made it there!
DAY 1 : 65 miles

Took subway to Penn Station to catch Long Island Railroad to Hunting Station. From there, biked to ferry to bring us to Bridgeport, Connecticut. From there, biked more, another ferry, more biking, stopped at grocery store and spent 50$ on food. Made it to camp ground well after dark. Set up camp in dark. Ate. Drank "Recoverite" to help us recover right. Slept. Total of 4 flat tires this day all changed by Dan.

Day 2: 73 Miles

Lots of Hills, Biked all through Connecticut. Stopped at Applebee's and Mark went in to refill our 10 water bottles, they were cool with it. Really hot out, kept biking all day, made it just into state of Rhode Island. Lots of hills, biggest I've ever seen in my life. biked up them, got near camp office. We werent sure if the camp ground was at the offices or 5 miles back over the monster hills we just biked over. turns out, it was back over the monster hills. Said F it. Ate hot subs and got a hotel. Mark slept on the floor but I gave him my pillow.

Day 3: 85 miles.

Started the day with another monster hill but it leveled out as the day went on. Temp was in the 90's. Biked through Providence, RI which was interesting, great biking, lots of small towns. All of our butts hurt, normal. kept going. Kept biking crossing into Massachusetts. Rode across that part of the state until we got to the Bourne Bridge which connects to Cape. It had two lanes on each side and we had to bike on some high speed ramps to get there. it definitely felt like we were crazy to be on it. Matt saw a sign that said no peds or bikes but he was behind us and we were all headed for the bridge so we went for it and made it across. about 20 ft before the bridge, Matt hit a sewer grate and lost a sunglasses lens. His wheel hit the grate pretty hard. After we crossed the bridge, Dan took a look and told Matt that his wheel was cracked. We had to keep riding, we were about 8 miles from the next camp in the Town of Sandwich. We biked to an English pub for dinner and we were all really tired. Dan had a cold.

Day 4: 30 miles

In the night it rained and was still raining in to morning. My shoes, Matt's and Sabrina's were soaked. We packed up our wet tent (dry inside though) and biked in the rain until we found a bike shop, about 20 miles away. Matt got a new back wheel installed by Dan. We got some Chowder then biked the rest of the way on an awesome bike path without cars. It went straight to Nickerson State Park where we had 3 nights of reservations. The Ranger delivered us firewood and we were all feeling great.

Day 5: Checking out the Cape, Grocery store, about 17 miles

Went to this Salt Water bay that goes out about a mile after the tide goes out. Hung out at the beach. Made a great dinner on the fire.

Day 6: Biking farther up the Cape near Marconi Beach: 35 miles

Went to the Beach on the ocean side of the cape. Really hot out. It seemed like a long ride up there, legs still sore. Then went to grocery store to get more food. Decided to swim across one of the lakes there. The day before, we had seen some kids swinging out into the lake from this rope. We wanted to check that out so we swam over. The rest of the story is better told in person by either Matt or Mark.

Day 7: Renting a Car to get home. 20 miles

Mark and I biked 20 miles to the Airport to pick up a KIA mini SUV. Matt waited at camp with my stuff. We got the car and picked up Matt and headed Home. We got to drive over the Bourne Bridge on the way back.

One Year in the Making

When I began making this last year, I would have never thought that it would have taken me an entire year to finish this project. The reason it has taken me so long is a combination of the size of the sculpture and being distracted by other projects. After I had the structure built, it sat up on the loft for a few months as I figured out how I wanted to paint it. I put so much time into it that I was sort of scared to ruin it. I started painting in in April and I finished on Sunday. I think I probably put 100 + hours of work into it but I cant be sure. It is a replica of a couch that we own. We got the original couch of off craigslist for free but had to carry it down 4 flights of stairs. It was really heavy. The woman who gave us the couch is a writer. She said, "Someday you guys are going to laugh about today when you remember being young and hauling this old couch down these stairs." The fabric was orange soft velvet with hideous brown flowers... from the 60's, not cool 60's but puke 60's. This is sort of a 2007-2008 version.

It's 5ft by 3 ft by 5 ft and completely hollow.

ARMORY SHOW

Oh yeah. I went to the Armory Show. It seemed like it was the same as last year, except less exciting. I probably wont go next year. But I will check out some of the other art fairs next year. I don't feel like going into details about the Armory Show. You know how it is. I do applaud myself for getting in with a student discount though. I am slowly reimbursing myself for my college through the saving that my now two year old ID continues to bring me.
